Karachi Khichri

Karachi Khichri is an immersive cultural heritage exhibition presented by TDF Ghar and The Dawood Foundation, inviting visitors to move through kitchens and bazaars, grinding stones and transport routes, to explore how Karachi feeds itself — and how that story is always, also, a story about belonging. The exhibition celebrates the stories behind everyday objects from traditional Pakistani homes, spotlighting artefacts that carried deep cultural rituals and domestic memory long before modern appliances took over. Among the featured pieces is the Madhani — a long wooden stick with a star-shaped base that served as the heart of the traditional dairy kitchen. Placed into a deep clay pot of Dahi and water, it was spun by wrapping a rope around the shaft and pulling the ends alternately, or by rolling it briskly between both palms. This simple motion separated Makhan from Lassi, no electricity required. Long before hand blenders and juicers took over, this was the machine every home relied on.
