Savka's Joke brings one of Belarus's most beloved comedy theatre traditions to Karachi as part of the World Culture Festival – Karachi 2026, performed by the Republican Theatre of Belarusian Dramaturgy at Studio 2, Arts Council Karachi. The performance revives the traditions of Batleika — the jewel of Belarusian national theatre — drawing also on the influences of Commedia dell'Arte and the Russian street theatre Balagan, all of which are recognised as origins of European theatrical tradition. The story follows Savka and Marysia, a husband and wife living in love and harmony, diligently running their household — until the Devil suddenly appears. What unfolds is an incredible interweaving of the real and the fantastic, the authentic and the caricatured, the modern and the ancient, with an abundance of music, visual art, and, of course, jokes. The situations played out are humorous and relatable to audiences everywhere, rich in sharp national colour and theatrical energy. Made in the Batleika genre, this production has been performed successfully in Belarus and abroad more than 300 times.
